Xtreme Autocross Championship 2012 – Round Two: Asad’s brilliant show on wheels illuminates racing contest
KARACHI, April 20: A truly brilliant show on wheels by skilled race driver Asad Khuhro and a dazzling display by Ghazanfar Agha had a typically vocal Karachi crowd going wild with joy during Round Two of the Xtreme Autocross 2012 Championship, which was held recently at the Fountain Parking lot, Clifton.
The event was witnessed by thousands of people who kept coming in throughout the evening. Security and safety arrangements included rescue vehicles, a fire brigade, and ambulance service at the venue. Xtreme Motorsports had covered all aspects of spectators' comfort with fine arrangements including a food court, souvenir stalls, and special seating for women and children.
Xtreme Motorsports race director Mansoor Halim, who designed the track, held the drivers' briefing at 8pm, after which the 2nd round of Xtreme Autocross 2012 was flagged off.
The Ladies category was won by the talented Fizza Anvarali, who drove her Honda City to perfection.
The Novice category had five young participants contesting for the single trophy and was eventually won by Mustafa Adam, driving a Honda Beat.
The D-Stock category saw an exciting duel between Uzair Habib and Nauman Saranjam. Nauman, despite having a poor start to the 2012 championship, came back with a bang to snatch the category from Uzair. He now leads this category by one point over Uzair, who is currently on 14 points.
The C-Stock category, which is the most competitively contested in the event, was once again won by the ever-prolific Ghazanfar Agha. Ghazanfar was on fire during Round Two, and his masterly display was lauded by one and all on the night.
He has now gathered 20 championship points and is looking very strong to clinch this championship. This round also saw a strong comeback from Irfan Mirza, who took second position, while third went to Ayub Khuhro.
The B-Stock category saw an intense battle for first position, with Mohammad Raheel nearly taking it until he hit the cone on the last corner of his final lap. Syed Asif Imam won the category — his second victory in a row — securing a strong position in the 2012 championship with 20 points.
The C-Prepared category saw the experienced Imam Ali Shah competing hard with Saleem Tabani. Imam, the three-time champion of Xtreme Autocross, was expected to take this category with ease, but Saleem then drove a lap of his life that stunned Imam. This category is now led by Khawaja Shayan with 12 points, who came fourth in this round, behind Amir Ali Shah, who once again secured third position.
The B-Prepared category saw Samir Feroze get the better of skilled drivers like Zaheer Hussain Shah, Mukesh Chawla, and Khawaja Ahad, winning the race in style. Zaheer and Mukesh took second and third places respectively.
Finally, the A-Prepared category saw a dazzling Asad Khuhro enthralling the packed crowd, confirming why he is regarded as one of the best track drivers in Pakistan.
Driving his Toyota MR-S against rally legend Nadir Magsi and the talented Shamyl Khuhro, Asad Khuhro had been way ahead since Round One and had the category in the bag from the beginning, until Shamyl Khuhro posted a strong last round and led the category for a few minutes.
But then Asad, on his last lap, pulled off the fastest time of the day to shock his rivals, including Shamyl Khuhro and Ahsan Rasheed, who finished second and third respectively.
